How important is it for your organization to know how to pick and pack? It can have a profound effect on the organization’s ability to effectively manage its inventory. And, if your organization is not picking and packing in a method that meets the requirements of the customers, then they will simply not be able to do business with you. Customers want to be able to receive their products easily and quickly. And, pick and pack methods that allow for that are desirable.

The ability to pick and pack merchandise with maximum efficiency and product acceptance is an absolute key factor in order fulfillment and is often described as “order processing”. Order processing operations or functions are typically known as “distributors” or” AMC”. In order to meet these important needs, a complete pick and pack fulfillment system are required.

An organized pick and pack process are necessary because it enables the distributors to meet customers’ orders with high speed and at a very low cost. In the retail industry, speed is the key word. People want their products on their store shelves and in their checkout lanes. In a highly competitive retail environment speed is paramount. Therefore, the pick and pack process need to be keeping very streamlined and in a very efficient manner.

An efficient pick and pack system should involve three phases. The first phase involves pre-boarding. During this time an individual sales team member is assigned the responsibility of pre-boarding customers so that they are able to enter the store with a ticket. Once a customer passes through the turnstiles, that person is directed to another area where a zone picking machine can locate the product they wish to purchase.

The second phase is after the customers have passed through the turnstiles, the items are loaded into the zones on conveyor belts and taken to the packing area. Once there, the items are packed either using one method or a combination of different methods depending on the type of merchandise being picked and packed. Then the products are stacked in a rack and the goods are removed from the rack and placed in a container. This method of pick and pack is known as wave picking.

The third phase of the pick and pack process involves the actual packing of the product in a warehouse. Typically the warehouse will use a forklift truck to transport the merchandise from the warehouse floor to the warehouse shelving. This method of picking and packing ensures that inventory levels do not fall below the desired level. It also ensures that the warehouse receives the merchandise when it is needed, which in turn helps to ensure that ecommerce operations operate at optimum efficiency.

Once the products are packed in the warehouse they are placed on pallet racking. These racks are often positioned close to the shipping desks at the business premises. When an order comes in for a product that requires pick and pack services, the employees at the shipping desk can call up the pick and pack station and have the orders filled prior to the customer receiving their shipment. Some businesses may actually deliver the packaged goods directly to the customer once they reach the pick and pack station. Alternatively customers may place their order with the company and allow the company to deliver the goods directly to their home.

In essence the pick and pack process can be split into three distinct phases. The first phase is when the order is received, the goods are packed in multiple zones and the goods are delivered to the customer. The second phase is when the products are packed in a warehouse and the goods are delivered to the customers home. Finally, the last phase of the process is when the ordered item is picked and packed at the fulfillment station.
