One of our clients recently had his website hacked. He was not very happy about it because his SEO was not that high so his rankings were not that good. His income did not suffer. His music executive was attacked by hackers and he lost his business. He had his SEO set to high, but still his income was fine.

What happened was pretty simple. Our client used two PHP servers, and one had a reduced footprint, while the other one was using more and he got some errors when he was trying to build his website. As seo did not have any control over the hosting servers, he ended up having two PHP Servers with lots of problems on them. The first one was actually under security and had a lot of security holes. The second one, which was more reliable and had less security holes, caused the server to go down every single day.

When he complained about the SEO settings being too aggressive and he had reduced its power on his website, he was told by one of our Web Engineers that it was because the URL was too long. In fact, the URL was only two words long, but we put it under security because apparently it was an error on the code. In fact, there were so many security checks which were being done that it became very clear that something was wrong. However, the question was, “How could you make the URL shorter if it was already under security and this kind of error happened?” This is when we explained him that in the Google stack, each page has a security settings which determine the level of risk for the page. The one he had was “combined” meaning that it was a combination of directories and keywords. Weebly uses different algorithms and methods for each of its pages, and the combination of all these resulted in the error message generated. We were unable to fix the problem, but we managed to show him the log files which showed that the problem was actually located in the SEO settings.

Fortunately, he understood this very well and fixed the problem by removing some malicious codes from his code. It was quite scary for him to see the attack on his website’s logs, because he had never seen anything like it before. When he restored the old SEO settings, the error messages did not appear and the website did run perfectly. It was just a matter of time before he made a full recovery and the website returned to him. As he was going through his backups, he realized that if any of the files had been infected, he could have recovered them but, unfortunately, he had no way to recover the content of the pages which had gone corrupted by the malicious codes.
