3PL is short for 3-stage logistics, which means that the company’s logistics are organized around three stages, instead of around the traditional multiple-stage processes. In logistics, a company has to deal with inventory, order and delivery of goods in a timely fashion to maintain a steady flow of goods in and out of the warehouse. If one stage is delayed, then the whole process will be affected. In supply chain management, companies have to consider how they transport raw materials, work materials and finished products to their final destination.

The term “3PL” refers to the relationship between the customer, the supplier and the logistics services company. In a normal supply chain, there is only a one-way connection between these three entities. For example, in the manufacturing industry, factories make the final product or deliver the finished goods to the customer. The customer orders raw materials from the manufacturer, who in turn delivers them to the warehouses. There is no interaction between the two entities. Only after the products have been delivered to the manufacturers and warehouses contact the suppliers for replenishment.

In contrast, 3PL providers create a relationship between the customer, the supplier, and the logistics provider. 3PL providers typically act as a bridge between the supply chain and the supply of goods to both customers and warehouses. The companies utilize 3PL providers to help them achieve effective and efficient cross functional management. The role of the 3PL provider is to bridge the gap in the supply chain between the supplier and the warehouse by using strategic alliances and joint venture arrangements to provide the inventory management needs of both parties.

For a 3PL provider to become part of the supply chain, it must have an efficient inventory tracking system that is integrated with order fulfillment software. This inventory management system should include real-time inventory management and reporting capabilities. Real time inventory management means being able to capture data on the inventories of the client company and the suppliers. This data is then fed into the system so that the logistics providers can create reports that are instant in nature and that can be viewed in real time. The reports generated by the 3PL provider should be in line with the needs of the client company. It should also be able to generate reports that are cost effective, as well as those that are customized to meet the specific needs of the client company.

The third aspect that a 3PL provider must focus on is quality customer experiences. In general, the more satisfied a customer is with the services of a third-party logistics provider, the more likely they will recommend them to others. For this reason, a 3PL provider must work hard to develop excellent relationships with the clients they service. These relationships can be built by making every effort to provide superior customer experiences. This might mean meeting clients where they are, such as at trade shows, trade show exhibits or even by offering free customer service at their facility.

Another aspect for a 3PL to focus on is the timely delivery of goods. This might require the company to outsource warehousing requirements to a third-party logistics provider. However, there are certain warehousing requirements that can be fulfilled internally if an individual logistics service provider is so inclined. In addition to providing a secure and safe storage facility, a 3PL can also offer quick delivery on certain types of goods.

One other aspect of warehousing and distribution that must be handled competently is the supply chain management. If a 3PL company fails to provide a viable supply chain framework, they risk losing their clients. There are many different ways that logistics providers can go about streamlining the distribution process. Some of the ways include consolidation of networks between carriers, automation of tasks that do not need to be automated, and improvement of shipping practices.

All of the above mentioned aspects are necessary for a successful and profitable transportation and warehousing operation. If a 3PL provider does not offer these services to their clients, they may find themselves falling behind their competitors in the marketplace. The competition for customers is increasing by the day, and if a 3PL provider does not properly compete with other providers, they could find themselves struggling. In order to remain competitive, logistics providers need to provide all of the tools and services required to compete in the marketplace.
